The pronoun you is prototypicallyusedtorefertotheaddresseeoraddresseesinaninteraction,butitalsohasotheruses,includinga kind ofimpersonalreferencethatdoesnotpickoutanyparticularperson,butistheequivalentof someone, anyone, or one. Thispaper focuses onhowtheshifttoimpersonal you works inonegenreofinteraction,researchinterviewsbyacademicsocialscience researchers,wheretheparticipantsoftenuse you where thepreviousturnmighthaveprojectedtheuseof I or they. Wearguethatthe shift, andrelatedcuesofthedimensionofspecificvs.general,canbeseenasaformofstance-taking.Weexplorethreepossible functions:(1)recategorisingofthespeakerandtheircategory-associatedexperiences,(2)displayingperceptionsasshared,notmerely individual,and(3)invokingcommonplacestodealwithdilemmasposedbythequestion.Theserhetoricalactionscanberelatedtothe demandsoftheresearchinterview,withtheintervieweeclaimingordisclaiminganentitlementtohaveastance,supportingtheirstances against possiblechallenge,andgivingaccountsorresistingjudgmentsoftheinterviewee'sbehaviourorviews.Attentiontotheseshifts can makesocialscienceresearchersmoreawareoftheinteractionsunderlyingthetranscripts
