Inaugural speechasthefirstformalpresentationofanewpresidentplayshighlypersuasiveandideologicalfunctionsinthepolitical scene ofacountry.Thisstudyadoptedacriticaldiscourseanalysis(CDA)approachtoinvestigatethetypicaldiscursivecharacteristics underlyingtheinauguraladdress.Tothisend, George Bush's(2005) second termand Barack Obama's(2009) first terminaugural speecheswereanalyzedtoexplorethepotentialideologiessignaledbythediscursivestrategiesandrhetoricaldeviceswhichthese presidentsemployedtoexpresstheirpoliticalviews.Theresultsrevealedthatthespeakerspossessedarichrepertoireofdiscursive mechanismssuchasthepositiveselfandnegativeother-presentationstrategiesforinfluencingtheaddressees.Thefindingsalso attested theintricaterelationshipsexistingbetweenlanguage,powerandideology.
