Abstract
The discourse of the presidents of the United States and Iran in their speeches at the UN General Assembly is analyzed through the integration of micro-, meso-, and macro-level critical discourse analysis. The study highlights how social actors are represented and constructed within the discourses, how ideologies are shaped, and how notions of civilization are embedded in the speeches. The findings reveal that “other” social actors are prominently constructed across all speeches. Ethno-religious and political-cultural differences between the United States and Iran are emphasized through specific representations of these social actors. Ideologies and civilizations emerge as the primary sources of contrast and antagonism between the two countries. Although Huntington’s theory of “the clash of civilizations” seeks to explain global dynamics and claims universal applicability, the empirical data indicate that, while the theory resonates with certain aspects of US–Iran relations, it does not fully capture their complexity and mainly explains recurring global patterns.
