Abstract
Children’s exposure to online risks is soaring with the increased digital technologies penetration rates across the world. While the extent of children’s risk of exposure to online risks in various African countries has been studied, there is a paucity of literature published on Lesotho. Thus, this study sought to investigate the extent to which children in Lesotho are exposed to online risks. We used a cross-sectional descriptive study design, where quantitative questionnaires (online and hardcopies) were administered among school children aged between 9 and 17 years in Lesotho. Findings revealed that children in Lesotho have experienced various online threats, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, scams, and contacted by strangers. A significant number of the participants indicated they lacked enough knowledge on how to stay safe online and they mainly relied on their parents/guardians for information on online safety. However, some of them believe that their parents/guardians did not have enough knowledge on online safety. Most participants were active on social media, hence, the high risk of exposure. Parents/guardians of 85.7% of participants did not monitor their children’s Internet use. Findings revealed the need to capacitate children, parents, and schools on child online protection and develop tools to enhance child online protection in Lesotho. The findings help enhance the extent of online risk exposure among children in Lesotho. The study’s limitation is that it did not include children from rural areas (high lands) and only focused on school children whom we could easily reach. Thus, there is a need to extend the study nationwide to include participants from all the ten districts.
