This paper examines a range of views as to the nature of the language of the Bounty mutineers. It shows that its users have a range of concepts, which typically are at odds with those of outsiders and professional linguists. The quality of linguists’ pronouncements on this matter typically is based on prevailing intellectual fashion rather than informal judgement.
