This study aims to analyze and identify the use of metaphors in the monologues and dialogues presented in the film Avengers: Endgame (2019). This research employs a qualitative method to analyze the metaphors used, based on the approach proposed by Ullmann (1997). The analyzed data will be presented in the form of tables containing
monologues or dialogues from the film that include metaphorical expressions. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there are 159 monologues or dialogues containing metaphors. The most frequently used type of metaphor is the concrete to abstract metaphor, found in 55 monologues or dialogues. The second most common is the anthropomorphic metaphor, found in 52 instances. The third is the synesthetic metaphor, occurring in 31 cases. Finally, the animal metaphor appears in 21 monologues or dialogues. Each type of metaphor is used in various situations to build atmospheres such as tension, emotion, sadness, and humor throughout the film, with the intention of conveying messages and evoking the audience’s emotions. Ultimately, this study is expected to be beneficial both theoretically and practically for academics, teachers, and
film scriptwriters. |
