SEXUAL experience is a cogent variable that can be expected to exert influence, either subtly and/or conspicuously, on many facets of human activity. In Dawanese society of east-southeastern province (Nusa Tenggara tImur, hereafter: NTT) of Indonesia which are predominantly Christian by religion, it is common knowledge that they have a unique practise of ritual circumcision. The practice of male adult circumcision gives young men an opportunity to experience extramarital intercourse, known as Sifon. Sifon is obligatory "duties" which require the man undergoing the ritual to engage in sexual intercourse following the circumcision as part of series of ritual steps in which the women can be said to "sacrifice" themselves for the sake of the successful completion of the ritual. In any case it is required that the man have ritual intercourse with three different women on three separate occasions. The use of sexual imagery to depict religious experience is well attested in the history of religions. Such formulation, of course, is not strange to any of the major religious traditions in the Occident or Orient. In this paper, attention will draw to the possible influence of ritual circumcision, cultural identity, and religiosity. By closely examining several categories of significant cultural icons, this paper argues that the traditions which primarily a male affairs constituting Dawanese cultural identity and religiosity expression as a whole.
