Studies related to translanguaging in social media are primarily done in East Asia, especially in China, where they studied it on websites (Qi & Zhang, 2022), Weibo (Zhang & Ren, 2020; Ren & Guo, 2022) and WeChat (Han, 2019) or mainstream social media such as Twitter (Sukendra, 2022) or Facebook (Wei et al., 2020; Hua & Wei, 2019). Other researchers studied them in Online newspaper forums (Alimi & Matiki, 2016) and Posters (Zhang & Chen, 2015). In this thesis, the researcher selected Quora as the focal point for studying translanguaging space and identity construction. Quora, an international online platform designed for global sharing and interaction, is seen as a potential space for creating translanguaging environments and shaping user identities, particularly concerning national and cultural identity. To collect the data, the present study used the Lurking method by Addeo (2020) to have authentic and unbiased results since the participants were unaware of the researchers’ presence. After collecting the data, to answer the first research question, Translanguaging strategies by Garcia and Wei (2014) and Wei’s (2018) theory were categorized by Ren and Guo (2022) to explain how the translanguaging space was created from each of the seven themes of Quora posts: Socio-cultural, Economy, Security, Language, Curse words, Food, and Fashion. To answer the second research question, Chronotope by Blommaert and De Fina (2017) and Wei’s (2011) translanguaging space theory explained how the translanguaging space enables Quora users to construct their identity. With those theoretical frameworks, the findings proved that with each theme, using translanguaging strategies: Multimodal resources, multilingual resources, and multi-semiotic resources, Quora users get to create translanguaging space by integrating their multimodal, multilingual, and multi-semiotic into one post or comment and by constructing the translanguaging space, the Quora users can use this space to construct their identity not only by translanguaging practices but also with their experience that they shared in Quora. With these findings which are 6301 words of Seven Indonesian-themed posts and comments in Quora forum, it can be concluded that Translanguaging space was created through translanguaging practices proven by translanguaging strategies. The constructed translanguaging space became a chronotope that the Quora users used to construct their identity in Quora. These results have significance in the roles of research and education by adding more social media platform to researches related to translanguaging and identity while also being an example for English linguistic educators to use when teaching about subjects that include translanguaging. The limitations of this study include only having seven Indonesian-related themed Quora posts with 25-50 comments and the data collection method, which is the Lurking method by Addeo (2020). Thus, it would be interesting to investigate more themes from other countries and use not only lurking methods but other data collection methods such as participatory research or CMC – Computer-mediated communication. |
