This is the dawning of a new era in the world of manufacturing. The new design and development of the manufacturing system called computer integrated manufacturing is replacing the conventional production system. The development of this manufacturing system and its plant layout makes products of superior quality at the lowest possible cost with on time delivery in a flexible way. This paper discusses the trend, development and types of manufacturing systems and plant layouts. How to choose the suitable manufacturing system and the plant layout are presented at the end of the paper.
