Isi artikelDiscussion about euthanasia, one of the most actual moral problems in or time, are often confusing, because it is not clearly what is meant by euthanasia. The definition adopted here is close to the one used in the debate in the Netherlands. Euthanasia is the intentional termination of life of a terminal patient by another at the former's request. When we examine rather accurately the arguments given in recent years in favor of and against euthanasia, it seems difficult to decide only on the basis of their rational weight. The author concludes that people accept or refuse euthanasia not only because of the strength of the arguments but particularly because of the values that imbue the whole debate. These values typically are religious in character. In addition to these there is a shift of value caused by different conceptions of death in the wake of scientific and technological developments in the medical field.
