Cosmology was born as a science in the crucible of the debates between the adherents of the two great cosmological theories, the Big Bang and Steady-State theories, in the first half of the 20th century. This article surveys the history of the debate that established cosmology as a modern science from a philosophical perspective. This debate gravitated around methodological, epistemological and ontological queestions precipitated by those theories, argued by scientists and philosophers. In this debate, the hypothetica-deductive method triumphed over the inductive empiricist method. However, there still remains a plurality of methods in cintemporary cosmology. Furthermore, in evaluating those two great theories, cosmologists often appealed to extra-scientific criteria such as simplicity, beauty, order and direction; thus highlighting the intricate connection of cosmology to philosophy.
