Isi artikelAlthough vacuum tubes have been replaced by semiconductor devices for several decades, one important type of vacuum tube, the cathode ray tube (CTRT) is now still in use as in oscillography, television picture tubes, data display tubes for personal computer and a display device in radar (radio detection and ranging) installations. After a short summary of the development of the CRT, the author elaborates on the construction, operation and characteristics of the modern monochrome cathode ray tube with electrostatic as well as electromagnetic focusing and deflection system.
