Abstract
Introduction: Realizing that nutrition among elderly is often neglected, we look for problem of nutrition specifically dual problems of nutrition among elderly in Indonesian province using data from National Basic Health Research in the year 2007. Recently dual nutrition problems are discussed as problems among child and adult age groups in low middle income countries. Method: At National Basic Health Study, respondent consisted of 111743 total of person of 55 years old and more, out of 227630 households selected using block census proportional to size by district and province in Indonesia, from 440 districts in Indonesia which is distributed at 33 provinces. The data are collected through measurement of BMI by trained interviewers. Univariate analysis was performed to look for comparison of prevalence of underweight and overweight. Results: Out of 33 provinces in Indonesia, there area 9 provinces where prevalence of overweight is higher than under nutrition. Majority of provinces have higher undernutrition among elderly persons. Nationally the data shows there are 22.6% undernutrition and 15.6% overweight among elderly persons. There are 6 provinces have more than 20% undernourished elderly while there are 3 provinces (Sulawesi Utara, Kalimantan Timur and Jakarta) have overweight elderly more than 25%. Conclusion: This study called for attention on dual nutrition problems, it shows diversity of elderly problems of nutrition in Indonesia provinces and call attention for local health provinces to analyze and plan their local health elderly improvement plan and call for further study to look for determinant of dual nutrition problems among elderly persons in Indonesia.
