| ABSTRACT DIFFERENCE IN PREVALENCE OF L. pneumophila AND Legionella spp. AT ATMA JAYA HOSPITAL AND FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCE By: JENNI MUTIARA SARAGIH Supervised by: ENTY, SOEGIANTO ALI Background: Legionnaires' disease (LD) is still one of the world's concerns because the incidence of this disease continues to increase every year and gives a poor prognosis if the patient is not treated. From 2002 to 2009 there were 72 cases of LD in Singapore. In 2016, there was one case of this disease in Bali. Legionella spp. grow in man-made building water systems, such as showers, sinks, air conditioners, water heaters, and hot tubs. Therefore, the aim of study is to know the presence of Legionella spp. and L. pneumophila in condensing water in air conditioners in Atma Jaya Hospital and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Method: There were 36 water and swab samples in total taken from air conditioner (AC). The media used for bacterial culture are Legionella Charcoal Yeast Extract (CYE) medium with Legionella BCYE Growth Supplement and Legionella BMPAa Selective Supplement. Results: This study was descriptive research. The results showed nineteen colonies with the characteristics of Legionella spp. or L. pneumophila, but the latex agglutination test gives negative results. Conclusion: Legionella spp. and L. pneumophila were not found from condensing water and AC swabs at the Atma Jaya Hospital and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. A more sensitive examination is needed to confirm the presence of these bacteria. |
