Abstract
Introduction: Recurrent stroke is a major contributor of disability and death in the world. Hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus or combination of hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been known as risk factors for recurrent stroke. However, no study has been done to find out which one is the main factor for recurrent stroke.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find which of all risk factors has a greater risk for recurrent stroke Methods: This study was a descriptive analytic study performed at a private hospital in 2009-2010. Data were collected from medical records of stroke patients by using a check list covering the identity of the respondent, history of the first and last stroke, risk factors, the patient’s level of consciousness in their first visit, and the disability caused by recurrent stroke.
Results: Out of 152 medical records identified, there were 59 medical records with recurrent stroke (38.8%). The analysis of hypertension, diabetes mellitus or both showed no difference in terms of influence between these three factors to the incidence of recurrent stroke (p=0.077). The results could be seen in analysis between combination of hypertension and diabetes mellitus or diabetes mellitus (p=0.714) and hypertension or diabetes mellitus (p=0.157) which showed the same significant results to the incidence of recurrent stroke (p=0.714). However, differences were found between hypertension and combination of hypertension and diabetes mellitus to the incidence of recurrent stroke (p=0.026). Conclusion: This study concluded that hypertension as a single risk factor is less influential, but the presence of diabetes mellitus increases the risk of recurrent stroke.
