Abstract
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a disorder involving motoric and vocal tics. One of its key aspects is inhibitory control, as TS is theorized to be related to inhibitory control deficit. Inhibitory control also plays a significant role in behavioral therapies for TS. However, studies on TS individuals’ inhibitory control have yielded mixed results due to the lack of age range and comorbid ADHD controls. Additionally, qualitative reporting is lacking, hindering a comprehensive understanding of daily life experiences related to TS individuals’ inhibitory control performances. This research uses a mixed-method design with a convergent parallel approach. Using the stop-signal task, the quantitative approach compared the inhibitory control performance between TS and non-TS participants. The results of both groups are compared using the Mann-Whitney U test. Meanwhile, qualitative data were gathered through interviews. Participants of this study are ten adolescents of ages 12-18, with five in each group. Non-TS participants’ age and gender were matched with TS participants. Results showed a significant stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) difference between both groups, with a large effect size. The ranking of the TS group is systematically bigger than the non-TS group, showing an inhibitory control deficit in the TS group. Qualitative analysis revealed that TS individuals experienced more significant challenges in daily activities involving inhibitory control, such as resisting external temptations, restraining movement, and proportionately expressing anger. However, future research can focus on older TS individuals since they have different life challenges and cannot rely much on their parents for support. This topic is interesting since TS participants who are less reliant on their parents reported less inhibitory control difficulties.
