Abstract
In modern times, professionals connect comfortably on a global scale driven by their respective corporate goals. Communication turns boundless despite the distance, diverse native languages, and cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to investigate communication strategies employed by Indonesian participants when they delivered their directives to professionals from various countries through the medium of email correspondence and virtual meetings. Emails and virtual meeting recordings were collected from contributors who work from various industries, and scrutinized to identify the employment of head-act strategy, upgrading and downgrading modification, and accommodation in delivering requests and instructions to accomplish the participants' communicative objectives. Participants of the study also revealed their perceptions of required skills and strategies based on their own experiences to ensure successful intercultural communication. The present study has found that the Indonesian participants generally employed mood-derivable non-imperative, locution derivable, preparatory, need/want statements, conventionalized formulas, and pre-decided statements in their emails. The use of hint and performative strategy was rare, and no embedded directive and mood-derivable imperative were found. Upgraders were adopted in urgent and important matters only, particularly in the case of non compliance or delayed response. This study has also shown a tremendous effort of accommodation by all participants through verbal and nonverbal communication in virtual meetings despite cultural backgrounds, language proficiency, and native accent influence, which is a key characteristic of BELF (Cogo & Dewey, 2006). The recording has showcased smooth and flowing conversation in intercultural communication despite the lack of language proficiency (grammatical errors, native accent, pronunciation, and many more). Participants of this study perceived that it is fundamental to pay attention to lexical items and syntax organization to avoid misunderstandings and to remain polite and focused on the job regardless of the urgency of the issue. It can be concluded that the Indonesian participants in this study believe that establishing rapport and maintaining it, is one of the keys to successful intercultural communication. This study may shed light on the importance of enhancing confidence in speaking and writing within a business context. Business English tutors are recommended to provide a holistic perspective of the importance of accomplishing the goal rather than overly worrying about language proficiency. However, it is also crucial to tailor it according to the managerial roles and responsibilities, as well as the company’s industry. Furthermore, it is recommended to embed actual intercultural communication experiences in Business English Courses, through videos or articles, apart from other traditional Business English topics. Keeping updated with business communication practices both in spoken and written discourse is also crucial to teach students agility. The limitation of this study is the limited number of participants and industries, therefore it is recommended that future researchers observe other different industries with more culturally diversified participants and analyze the impact of employing “imperfect English” in the Indonesian context both in spoken and written mediums of communication. Lastly, it must be interesting to learn more about how participants’ working experience and educational backgrounds affect their choices of communication strategies and perspectives on successful intercultural business communication.
