Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is still a public health burden. The need for intensive monitoring and adherence to treatment has a high impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the smartphone app intervention on the QoL of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: The randomized controlled trial study was designed to involve two groups [smartphone app (n=30) and usual care (n=30) groups] with pre- and post-test procedures. The participants were T2DM patients receiving outpatient treatment at Atma Jaya Hospital (Jakarta, Indonesia) from December 2019 to February 2020. Smartphone apps intervention received by one arm groups for 3 months. The data were collected using EQ-5D-3L questionnaire and were analyzed using T-tests to evaluate the change in EQ-5D score for two groups (smartphone app vs. usual care) and the significance was set to P<0.05. Results: The QoL change was significantly higher in the smartphone app group compared to the usual care group after 3 months. The EQ-5D-3L change index was 0.1 for the smartphone app group and 0.05 for the usual care group after 3 months follow up (p<0.001). In addition, the change in the EQ-VAS score was 10.40 for the smartphone group and 1.40 for the usual care group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Smartphone-based app intervention helps improve the QoL of T2DM patients.
