Abstract
Phenolics and flavonoids are secondary metabolites in plants that provide good antioxidants properties to counteract free radicals and oxidative damage and inhibit inflammation. Ulva lactuca is known to contain various bioactive compounds which correlate with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, including phenolics and flavonoids.
This study aims to analyze the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of Ulva lactuca ethyl acetate extract (ULEE) gathered from Sumbawa. Ulva lactuca was collected from Lakey Beach, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. It was macerated in ethyl acetate, then the total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC) was measured using the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminum chloride colorimetric method. Antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH method. The carrageenan-induced paw edema method was used to evaluate its anti-inflammatory activity.
The result showed that TPC, TFC, and IC50 of ULEE were 17.222 ± 0.397 mg GAE/g, 12.000 ± 0.403 mg QE/g, and 156.103 ± 4.075 ppm, respectively. The anti-inflammatory activity of ULEE (85, 175, and 350 mg/kg BW) shown significant difference in decreasing mice paw edema volume (p < 0,001) compared to negative control. This study suggests that ULEE possessed anti-inflammatory activity that might be supported by not only its antioxidant compounds but also other bioactive compounds.
