Abstract
A total 53 bacterial endophytes isolates originated from healthy banana plant were screened for their beneficial properties, particularly in enhancing banana plant defense system against fusarium wilt. Endophyte bacteria were inoculated to banana in vitro culture prior to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc4) infection in order to enhance plant defense system. Isolate C3 (putatively Rhizobium daejonense) and 9c.2 (putatively Stenothropomonas nitrireducens) reduced total necrosis area caused by Foc4 infection. In addition, isolate L2.7 (putatively Kocuria rhizophila) significantly reduce the decreasing dry weight due to Foc4 infection (Kruskal Wallis, p:0.012). Inhibition zone was observed in dual plate culture of 9c.2 isolate against Foc4. However, no inhibition zone was observed for isolate C3 and L2.7. The ability of these endophytic bacteria to decrease necrosis and promote plant growth during Fusarium infection, as well as controlling Fusarium growth would be beneficial to increase banana plant survival against Fusarium wilt. Further analysis will be done to confirm beneficial effects of these bacterial isolates against Fusarium wilt.
