Abstract
Kidneys and ureters are part of urogenital system, which is developed from intermediate mesoderm. The permanent organs of urinary system in adult are preceded by a set of structures which are purely embryonic and almost all of the ducts disappear before the end of fetal life. The embryonic structures: the pronephros, the mesonephros and metanephros are located on bilateral side. The pronephros will disappear earlier. The mesonephros are mostly degenerate, while the gonad is developed in its place, which the Wolffian duct remains as the duct in males, and the Müllerian as the duct in female. Some tubules of the mesonephros will form part of the permanent kidney. There are some anomaly development of the kidneys and ureters that potentially cause image misinterpretation. In many instances, there are so many anomalies and pathologies of the kidney including amount, fusion, location, shape, vasculature, and collecting system. Many fetal urinary system abnormalities can be detected before birth by ultrasonography. Some of them are detected in child, teenage or adult. This article reported several cases of anomalies of the kidneys and ureters detected by ultrasonography and computed tomography scan.
