BACKGROUNDS : Complication of otitis media and cerumen obturans has brought many health burden towards nowadays-life. This research aimed to determine the underlying factors associated with the prevalence of otitis media and cerumen obturans.
METHODS : This research used cross sectional study design and was conducted on 761 primary school students. Data was obtained by filling out the questionnaire, anamnesis, and physical examination with the otorhinolarygnology doctor in order to oblige the diagnosis of otitis media and cerumen obturans whilst assessing the researched variables. Furthermore, data obtained was processed with a chi-square test to analyze the significance of otitis media and cerumen obturans with age, gender and socioeconomic status.
RESULTS : The majority group of otitis media sufferer were female (57,1%), children-age category (85,7%), and have a low socioeconomic level (92,9%). An extremely significant interaction was found with a chi-square test between age and otitis media (p = 0,000). The majority group of cerumen obturans sufferer was also discovered, where 50,6%, 89,9%, and 75,7% of the sufferers were male, children-age category and have a low socioeconomic level, respectively. Based on the bivariat analysis results, relation between age (p = 0,034) and socioeconomic status (p = 0,028) towards cerumen obturans prevalence was statistically significant.
CONCLUSION : Prevalence of otitis media affected by the age of the sufferer. Cerumen obturans is not only dependent upon the age yet also depend on the socioeconomic status. |
