Abstract
Background: Recent advances in medicine have brought substantial increase in life expectancy. This in turn increase the morbidity of degenerative diseases, including cognitive decline due to neurodegeration. One of the factors that may prevent the cognitive decline is social activities, including child rearing activities by elderly.
Method: This is an analytical descriptive study, with a cross-sectional design, conducted from July 2016 to January 2017 at Pusat Santunan Keluarga, West Jakarta. The subject of this study was all elderly women aged IS 60 years old with a formal education of <9 years duration, who were willing to participate.
Results: There was 51 study subjects with a mean age of 68.6 ± 5.6years old, 31 of whom (64.7%) were involved in child rearing activities. Among subjects who reared their grandchildren, only 33.3% showed cognitve memory decline, compared with 94.4% decline in those who did not rear their grandchildren (p^O.OOO; OR=34) using MMSE screening test. Similar results were shown in language cognitive function where 33.3% had cognitive language decline as opposed to 83.3% decline (p=0.002; OR=10).
