Abstract
Introduction: Studies about risk factors of dementia in elderly with low level education are still scarce. This study investigates factors which increase risk of dementia in elderly with low level education.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional study involving 271 elderly subjects with less than 6 years formal education. Dementia is diagnosed if an MMSE score of less than 24 and at least 1 limitation in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) are present. Examination of olfactory nerve function was performed using 10 odors commonly found in Indonesia, olfactory deficits if score <6 from 10 odor identification. This study used secondary data of Atma Jaya Cognitive and Ageing Research from the cohort of year 2011-2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Result: There were 87 (32.1%) of respondents with dementia. Multivariate analysis showed age, and olfactory function as risk factors of dementia in elderly with low level of education (p<0.05), while gender, HDL, LDL, blood glucose, and APOE showed no relation with dementia.
Conclusion: Age and olfactory was the main risk factor of dementia in elderly with low level education.
