Abstract
Background: With increasing life-expectancy, the elderly population in Indonesia has been growing steadily, causing higher prevalence of degenerative diseases like dementia. However, the prevalence of dementia in Indonesia has not been clearly documented. The province of Yogyakarta has the largest elderly population in the country and is suitable to represent patients with dementia in the whole of Indonesia.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of dementia and its risk factors and to describe caregiver knowledge of the early symptoms of dementia in Yogyakarta.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study using structured questionnaires in 1.976 elderly and 1.415 caregivers was performed from December 2015-January 2016 at all districts of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Diagnosis of dementia was confirmed if all the following were present: MMSE scores lower than normative values (adjusted for age and level of education), difficulties in performing IADL and AD8 score = 2.
Result: The prevalence rate of dementia [in subjects older than 60 years] in Yogyakarta is 20.1 % and was higher in subjects with older age, females, those living in rural/remote areas, low education, unemployment, and previous history of stroke. Less than 10% of the subjects and caregivers were aware that memory-loss was an important early symptom.
Conclusion: The prevalence rate of dementia in Yogyakarta is higher in comparison to the global rate and the knowledge of the early symptoms of Dementia in the elderly population and caregivers was extremely low.
