The spread of English throughout the world engendered the development of a wide variety of English, which is then called the World Englishes (WE). WE is an important topic, especially in relation to pre-service English teachers. The pre-service English teacher’s attitude and awareness towards the plurality of WE is very relevant to all possible adjustments in ELT practices. Many previous studies have discussed language attitude and language awareness separately. However, research that studies the relationship between language attitude and language awareness towards WE, especially in the context of pre-service English teachers, has not been widely explored. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by conducting research on the relationship between pre-service English teachers’ language attitude and language awareness towards WE and its implication towards their teaching practice. This study employed correlational and interview-based research. The research data were obtained from 62 respondents who filled out questionnaires from 3 universities from Jakarta and Tangerang. In addition, there were 9 interviewees. The results showed a weak relationship between Indonesian pre-service English teachers' language attitude and language awareness towards world Englishes. Respondents showed a positive attitude towards WE but had moderate awareness. In teaching implications, pre-service English teachers view WE as an important topic to be taught to students, but they tended not to teach it because they have to follow the school curriculum. |
