Isi artikelThe Endaka recession of 1986 was the short - term impact of the yen appreciation but thereafter the Japanese economy adjusted to it with remarkable ease. Appreciation caused sweeping structural changes in the economy which, in turn, led to highly successful economic adjustment. For instance, an export - oriented economy made a U - turn to become a domestic - demand - oriented one. The experiences of the corporate world were clearly polarized, while one set of firms benefitted from the strong growth in domestic demand, the other suffered from the deflationary impact of the currency appreciation.
