Abstract
The existence of the COVID-19 outbreak has challenged Indonesian EFL teachers to conduct the teaching of speaking skills remotely through online media. Speaking skills, however, possess the nature of the interaction, which can not easily be assessed through online media, since the course design, assessment, and teaching strategies used by the teachers during this difficult situation were originally designed for non-Emergency Remote Teaching classes (Khalil et al., 2021). Due to this reason, this study aims to investigate the teaching implementation of the English speaking skills at the university level taught during the Emergency Remote Teaching, explore the challenges and strategies that the teachers use in teaching speaking skills in Emergency Remote Teaching. In addition, this study analyzed the teachers’ advantages of the teaching practices. The participants of this study were ten English lecturers who taught speaking skills during the Emergency Remote Teaching. Employing a case study design, the data collecting techniques were questionnaire survey, course design, virtual observation, and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by using relevant theories of post method teaching (Kumaravadivelu, 2001; 2006) and teaching speaking skills in remote settings (Ward, 2016; Montiel-Chammoro, 2018; Karatas and Tuncer, 2020). The findings revealed that teachers applied post method teaching together with particular methods as proposed by ELT professionals in their teaching practices. In addition, despite using various approaches, methods, and techniques, teachers faced challenges in three aspects namely: interaction, assessment, and classroom management. To cope up with these, the strategies used to deal with the challenges are classified as giving frequent clarification, assigning more group discussions, making flexible rules, building classroom atmosphere, managing time, and others. Besides, several benefits were obtained during the Emergency Remote Teaching of speaking skills which include: creating remote and non-remote teaching method, exploring digital creativity, and developing emotional intelligence.
