W. Edwards Deming’s message ended with his death in 1993. Much has happened in the global economy since then. Is his message still appropriate today? Is it appropriate for sustainability? Few people really understand the depth of Deming’s message of the last 10 years of his life. It was best captured by his last book, “The New Economics” in 1993 and by those attending his famous 4-day seminars in the U.S., Canada, England, Switzerland, and Australia. Deming [1] stated that the present style of management is a modern invention and represents “a prison created by the way in which people interact.” Deming’s “System of Profound Knowledge” serves as the intellectual foundation for transforming to a new style of management. The knowledge framework combines elements of psychology, the Shewhart view of variation, the concepts of systems, and the theory of knowledge. This framework provides a map of theory by which to understand the organizations that we work in. This paper defines profound knowledge as a lens and then uses a process to generate 14 guiding principles. Some examples show how these principles can be used to guide sustainable development for industry, government, education, and healthcare in any country.
