Isi artikel A Color Contact Lenses Company has encountered Roll Throughput (RTP) Yield Loss due to defect lenses being produced. Such yield loss amounts to 14% of the total production. Out of 14% loss, 7.3% loss is due to 3 major defects, namely breakage, color spot and irregular shape. Basically, the Color lenses production comprises several major processes and it is not known which of the processes contribute to the 3 major defects. Hence, it is important for the Manufacturing Department to form a quality improvement team to identify the root causes of the defect so that the company can reduce the defect lenses being produced and at the same time to meet the customer satisfaction of good quality lenses. The Six Sigma Methodology of DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) is deployed to tackle this problem. Several tools have been employed to solve this problem including the Pareto Analysis, Cause and Effect Diagram, Failure Modes and Effect Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Control Charts, Design of Experiment and Responses Surface Methodology in the color lenses industry. The disciplined approach methodology of Six Sigma enables the team to tackle the problems effectively. The end results are very encouraging. By tackling the above-mentioned 3 major defects, the team is able to reduce the yield loss from 7.3% to 3.4%. That is 53.4% improvement leading to a substantial cost saving.
