Isi artikelThere is an acute shortage of teachers everywhere. We build on over 10 years of experience in using Information and Communication Technologies to provide teaching aids for instruction of adult illiterates in India. The instruction material belongs to the Government of India and the regional State Governments. It is based on their researched methodology for teaching adult illiterates. We have created multimedia versions of this material and had to contend with the difference between temporal aspects of teaching and the textual primers. The use of this technology has given at least a four fold improvement in productivity of teachers, and reduced the need for qualified and experienced teachers for delivering better than average instruction. This technology was intuitively developed. In this paper we delve into the reasons why these qualities are manifest and we present avenues for generalizing it based on our current experience so that it can be applied beyond functional literacy instruction to schooling and beyond. To this end, we have considered a detailed look at organization of instruction material and the teaching process so that quality norms can be established, so that technological tools can be devised to deliver quality instruction at attractive productivity rates in an assured way.
