Isi artikelEWNR / EQBG are BIS certified welding electrode product which means that any violation in specified properties including chemistry is liable for litigation. Chemistry is designed to limit tensile strength for cold drawing and resistivity for smooth welding. Billet is rolled into wire rod of 5.5 to 7 mm section which the customer cold draws into 2 to 3 mm for making core and finally the core is coated with flux. Due to stringent chemistry and criticality of manufacturing of this steel grade suffered from high rejection rate. The percentage of rejection of EWNR/EQBG heats was 17%. The goal of this project is to reduce the rejection from 17% to 5% by applying ‘Response Surface Methodology’. In the first phase of project, all the factors have been identified to find the most critical factors among all. Regression analysis was being used for the prioritization and validated the assumptions by using residual analysis. To find out the optimum condition of the controllable parameters, response surface design has been used and finally reached the optimum condition of the factors. By proper experimentation overall percentage of rejection was reduced drastically and SOP has been modified based on major changes.
