Cadista Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is the global generics business unit of Jubilant Life Sciences, an Indian multinational company with specialization in pharmaceutical research and development, manufacturing and industry support services. The company currently serves the U.S. and European markets, with production from an FDA-approved facility in Salisbury, MD. The formulations unit was facing a serious Backorder Situation. The Service level had dropped to less than 60% due to surge in industry demand. The capacities were not seemingly sufficient to meet the escalating demand. The threat of losing customer accounts and significant customer penalties called for a business transformation program to identify and address the underlying issues. The team used appropriate improvement methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, Optimization Modeling, Supply Chain Operations Reference etc to accomplish improvements. These methodologies were casted into a solution called i-planner for deployment. The project could resolve backorder issue and improve service levels up to 99%. The team developed optimization models that support planning processes and keep on generating Best-Fit Plans that can be deployed at the optimal level. The team decided to build planning framework through a tool that would be easy to use and maintained by the planner. The innovation was called iPlanner. It is a planning tool which has the capability to perform strategic (long term – 2-5 Yrs), tactical (3 – 12 months) and operational (daily planning) all under the same hood.
