Jubilant Lifesciences Radio Isotope business in North America was not able to achieve desired growth due to various competitive factors. The Business needed a complete transformation program to enable growth, as impediments were perceived in the operational inefficiencies. The business excellence team with the support of senior management undertook a complete strategic analysis for enterprise transformation using lean principles. The product family of iodine isotope contributing 60% to EBITDA was chosen for further improvement. The analysis revealed process weaknesses in the current procurement and production of Iodine. Being a radioactive material, its value was destroyed every second due to radioactive decay, a situation similar to melting ice cube. The speed of conversion was the key CTQ for reducing material consumption. The material availability was second CTQ as the order fill rates had to be greater than 99.99 % due to Iodine’s critical usage in medical imaging and therapeutic applications. The manufacturer’s leverage with supplier was poor as worldwide only 2~3 sources exist. The situation was mathematically modeled to reveal issues and suggest solutions that would improve upon the current situation. The optimization model created revealed 30% wastage due to various factors. Using lean methods, changes in material receipt and production schedules were affected. A metric of material usage efficiency was created to monitor ongoing performance. The project resulted in improvement of company’s EBITDA by 20%.
