It is now well known globally that India is riding on the industrial and economic growth curve on completion of 20 years of liberalisation. As a result, there has been immense competion amnogst the domestic players and MNC’s in automobile industry. This has led to increased emphasis on outsourcing and the quality management for sustainable development both in-house and at suppliers’ end, to ensure end customer satisfaction. At the same time the improving the viability of the vendors in competitive market is also of vital importance considering the higher economies of scale. To address issues such as above TATA Motors established Vendor Council and Vendor Support Centre. TATA Motors Limited is India’s largest automobile company with consolidated revenues of Rs 92,519 Crores (USD 20 Billion) in 2009-10 having its footprints across the globe by way of providing transport solutions in full range such as high end World Truck- Prima to a world famous tiny car- Nano. The company’s employees and all stakeholders are guided by the vision to be “best in the manner in which we operate, best in the products we deliver and best in our value system and ethics”. In this paper, an approach and framework of ‘Vendor Support Centre (VSC) ’, its objectives and methodology has been elaborated followed by a sample Case Study. Vendor Support Centre helps in leveraging Quality and Productivity in Vendor’s operations to achieve operational excellence through implementation of structured process, levelling-up through sharing of best practices, etc. Speed is the essence of this approach as each exercise at vendor gets completed in “One Week’s time”.
