Poverty is the most fundamental reality of developing countries. A direct improvement in energy services would allow the poor to enjoy both short-term and long-term advances in living standards. An affordable, reliable, secured, good quality energy and electricity are prerequisites of poverty alleviation and sustainable development of a nation. Presently, the global goal for ensuring energy and electricity for all is simply stated as sustainable development of the world and energy service is necessary condition for the sustainable development. In Bangladesh, energy and electricity consumptions in per capita term are amongst the lowest in the world and the country is rated as the least developing country. Generally, a secured and sustainable high growing demand in energy and electricity in particular are essential for Bangladesh in order to accelerate economic growth and improvement of living standards. Thus, the determination of primary energy supply mixes for tracing sustainable paths among various energy options and economic growth scenarios is necessary for formulating sustainable energy development strategy for Bangladesh. In this article, we have investigated the sustainable paths for power generation of Bangladesh focusing on various energy options based on International Guidelines on Indicators for Sustainable Energy Development (ISED) and adopted the Energy Models of International Atomic Energy Agency. It is realized through calculations that the present indigenous gas based monopoly development of energy in the power sector leads the country towards uncertainty. The country needs to import about 80% of its total primary energy requirement from 2020 due to exhaustion of indigenous gas by 2015 and requirement of a huge amount of natural gas shall have to be imported in order to follow the historical trend of gas usage in meeting the energy and electricity demand. The sudden rise in energy import dependency will badly affect the economy. It is also found that the introduction and expansion of nuclear, maximization of coal and limited use of indigenous gas for power generation could ensure the sustainable economic development and more than 15% contribution of nuclear power in overall generation mix beyond 2020 can ensure energy security of Bangladesh.
