Indonesia has various ethnic groups and therefore cultures. These make Indonesia an exotic and attractive country. However, the cultural differences can also be potential sources of conflicts if they are not managed properly. We believe that multicultural education at primary schools may reduce these conflict potentials. This action research was aimed at developing a multicultural education model for junior high-school using audiovisual aids that can help students appreciate the uniqueness and diversity of peoples and cultures in Indonesia. The research was carried out in several stages: (1) need assessment of school principals, teachers, and students. According to them, multicultural education was necessary, students should be involved as peer educators, and Betawi culture should be introduced first. (2) learning material development: Films on Betawi culture and social relations among junior high school students, teachers’ and peer educators’ guides to using the films. At this stage, teachers were involved as script writers, and students as actors. (3) implementation: Teachers integrated the films into the subjects they taught, peer educators organized film viewings and discussions. (4) monitoring and evaluation: observation was used to monitor the implementation in the schools. Several methods were used to evaluate the implementation of the model, namely, pre- and post-tests, FGDs with the teachers and students, and interviews with the school principals. Based on the evaluation, the learning materials were revised. This action research was carried out for 10 months, with 10 teachers, 16 students as peer educators, and 278 students participated in the implementation stage. Schools involved in this research: senior and junior high schools with different religious affiliations (Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, and Buddhism). Results: Most of the students (95%) have improved their knowledge in Betawi culture. All of them appreciated Betawi’s local wisdom. They (95%) were able to avoid negative inter-cultural attitudes. They all enjoyed studying using ICT. The films improved their receptiveness, and saved them from boredom. The teachers improved their teaching creativity, and school principals were inspired to develop audiovisual media. So, everybody in the schools changed.
