Conventional metal cam followersare built for relatively high loads, and that's overkill in light-duty applications. Cam followersthat use plastic-composite tires are a viable alternative to traditional designs. The iCam followersfrom Intech, Closter NJ, for instance, include two roller bearings and a zinc-plated shaft, and are dimensionally interchangeable with metal followers. iCam followerseasily carry the load while simplifying design. Other advantages include: 1. lube-free, 2. minimal wear, 3. low noise, 4. no particulates, 5. low inertia, and 6. harsh environments. The key to ensuring high performance and long life is accurately sizing the cam followersfor the relevant static and dynamic loads.
