Freud was not the only eminent speaker at G. Stanley Hall's conference in 1909. The 1910 volume of the American Journal of Psychology is filled with papers given at that conference by significant individuals such as William Stern, Edward B. Titchener, Franz Boas, and many others. From this large group we have selected one of Carl Jung's lectures. This conference and issue of the Journal was also the introduction of Jung to the American audience. In many respects, Jung's talks were received better than those of Freud. Even Titchener commented that Jung was more "psychological" than Freud. Jung's lectures explored the topic of the association method. The first lecture is really something of a short course in how to carry out the association method in a therapeutic setting. The second lecture deals with descriptions of how the association method had been applied. The third lecture, the one reproduced here, concerns a particular case study, the analysis of a 4-year-old girl. The study is not only interesting in its own right, but it may well be the first published presentation of Jung's notion of introversion. Like Freud, Jung lectured in German. The German text was rendered into English for this publication by A. A. Brill.
