Isi artikelEarlier investigations of normative semantic integration in sentence recall failed to equate semantically well-integrated (SWI) and semantically poorly integrated (SPI) sentences on imageabilitya nd comprehensibility.T he present experiments compensated for that failure using sentence ratings. Undergraduate subjects were exposed to SWI and SPI sentences under conditions of free and cued recall. In three free recall experiments, with controls for imageability and comprehensibility, increased semantic integration had no effect on sentence and word recall, although in two of the experiments, it facilitated holistic recall. In a final study, sentence, word, and holistic recall were facilitated by increased semantic integration when intrasentence retrieval cues were made available, thus confirming expectations of current spreading activation theory. Retrieval was mainly holistic in the present experiments, and the pattern of findings when subjects were given credit for synonymous recall was identical to that for verbatim measures.
