The direct election for local government leader -- that has been started at 2004--has given significant contributions to the democratic development in Indonesia. However, there are still many problems on its implementation, such as seat buying, influence buying, and vote buying. This situation has revealed debates regarding the importance of direct election at the local level. In spite of problems, there are a lot of advantages of direct election for local government leader. Furthermore, the government of Indonesia should be more focus on how to address this problems in all aspects such as legal basic, quality of apparatus (both election committee and election monitoring committee) and society awareness as well. Democratization is a prerequisite of good governance and its can't be stopped.
