Isi artikelSubjects named pairs of sequentially presented pictures and words. Four classes of pairs (picture-picture, picture-word, word-picture, word-word) and four types of pair similarity (repeated, related, synonymous, unrelated) were com- bined factorially. Naming latencies were facilitated more for pictures than for words, and significant facilitation occurred consistently for repeated and syn- onymous pairs. Mixed-class facilitation suggests that at some processing stage the pictures and words activate a common semantic representation. Facilitation was interpreted to reflect overlap in processing within that common system, as well as within visual and phonemic processing systems.
