Isi artikel
When psychologists were assimilating statistical practices into their discipline, they could not agree on the role statistics played in the interpretation of research findings. These disagreements stemmed in part from different research orientations, which encouraged different interpretations of very basic statistical terms. For instance, the probable error term has a straightforward statistical meaning. It comprises the middle 50% of the area around the mean of a normal distribution. In this article, I examine a debate over the interpretation of the probable error term that occurred during the middle 1920s. The focus of this article is that the meaning of the probable error term was not inherent in the mathematics, but was constructed to reflect the interests of competing research groups.
