Isi artikelA preliminary study on the potential of aquatic macrophyte Great Duckweed (Spirodela Polyrhiza) for lead phyto-remediation was carried out. Great Duckweed is planted in Hoagland solution containing four lead concentrations (1.0, 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 mg/L) and solution without lead concentration (0 mg/L) as control of concentration balance. Study results indicated that from the first day up to the seventh day, Great Duckweed shows a normal growth. Although in the second week to third week, color of leaf change to yellowish, plants still show an increasing of growth, as indicated by the increment of budding 150% - 200%, growth rate 34% (µ = 0,039 gram wet weight/day) until 54% (µ = 0,045 gram wet weight/day), while the control µ = 0,029 gram wet weight/day, and doubling time or generation time (tgen) more quick 6,1 - 8,5 days then control (23,9 days). It is assumed that lead in the phenomena is functioning similarly to iron in the photo-synthetic process. The other assumtion was related to metal-activated enzyms. In generally, lead up-take by Great Duckweed correlates strongly to first concentration on medium with correlation coefficient (r) - 0.83 to - 0.90. Accumulation of lead balance per biomass dry weight between leaf-stem and root shows 1:2 – 1:3. During twenty three days of growth, Great Duckweed can remove lead with 96.53% - 99.55%, or average of 97.64%. Great Duckweed shows therefore a great potential as plant lead phyto-remediation.
