Most textbooks deal with the four-strand skills, which consists of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Because it is not balanced in terms of skills, pronunciation is often being overlooked or neglected in the textbook, both in the teaching and learning process as well. Therefore, this study aims to analyse an English textbook for Elementary School level and whether the pronunciation materials in the book are suitable for Elementary School learners. The researcher does not use a particular instrument to collect the data and only analyse the data by looking at the pronunciation sections inside the textbook, in terms of chapters, sub-sections, pages, aspects, types of exercises and the teaching method. The result of this study shows that ‘Marigold: Book Five’ already have a specific part of pronunciation, but it is not yet sufficient because ‘Marigold: Book Five’ consists of more Segmental aspects in comparison to Suprasegmental aspects. However, there are possibilities that the Suprasegmental aspects may already be taught in the previous textbook series, or will be emphasized and focused more in the next series of the textbook. To sum up, pronunciation is an important sub-skill to learn since young age, especially in Elementary School level. It should not be ignored in favor of other skills, but it has to be properly introduced as well due to its influence in spoken language. Additionally, Segmental and Suprasegmental aspects must also be in the textbook for the students to learn and understand both. |
