This study was about the incidental acquisition of English prepositions through enhanced extensive reading instruction. This study was aimed to investigate the extensive reading plus its post-reading activities on the students' incidental acquisition of English prepositions In, On, At in Unika Atma Jaya. Thus, to achieve the objectives, the research questions are formulated as follows: (1) How is enhanced extensive reading implemented in the class? (2) Does the enhanced extensive reading instruction increase the students' incidental acquisition of English preposition IN, ON, AT? (3) What are the factors and challenges faced by the students when choosing the correct prepositions in the post-test? The participants of this study were twelve students in English Language Education Department, Faculty of Education and Language, Unika Atma Jaya who were taking an Extensive Reading on Non-Fiction class in Section A. The data of this present study were the description of the enhanced extensive reading implementation obtained using the field notes, the scores of the pre-test and the post-test that consist of three parts: Notice, Notice+Know, Notice+Produce, and the students’ responses of the open-ended questionnaire. The result showed that the implementation of extensive reading plus its post-reading activities brings a positive effect on the students' incidental acquisition who were experiencing those activities such as group discussion, vocabulary journal, vocabulary discussion, answer questions, and presentation in the classroom, the enhanced extensive reading improve the incidental acquisition English prepositions that can be seen from the improvement of the scores from pre- and post-test and EFL learners still have difficulties with some prepositions although they could answer the questions and have knowledge of English prepositions but they still have problems. |
