Abstract
Expatriates are the people living and working outside of their home-country and are usually hired because of their expertise in certain industry sector. Living and working abroad, there must be some differences between the home-country culture and the country and residence now. Those culture differences and challenges could lead to problems which would be called intercultural challenges. This study uses qualitative method with semi-structured interviews conducted towards the expatriates from Germany, New Zealand and France who are working in Indonesia to collect the data. Using the ‘Culture Map’ framework developed by Erin Meyer to distinguish the differences between the expatriate’s home country and Indonesia, it would be easier to address the differences that caused the problems. The findings of this study showed that most pointed out and problematic differences are in communicating, evaluating, leading, disagreeing and scheduling aspects. By addressing the differences and problems, it’s easier to make plans on how to solve the problems and the solutions. Each expatriate had different coping mechanisms while facing intercultural challenges but on the whole, they tried to adapt to the culture and communicate with others to clear up misunderstandings.
