The smartphone’s portability and convenience of browsing information have promoted its widespread use in today’s community. Taking this development into account, it is become necessary to choose the appropriate typographic factors to enhance the readability on smartphone screen, as reading on screen text is different from printed text. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of font style, font size, screen rotation and contrast on smartphone screen readability and determine the factor levels that deliver fastest response time. For this purpose, the level factors examined in this study were selected based on the options offered in the smartphone. This study used a multifactorial design with 4 main factors and 60 treatments/combinations. The experiment was conducted on 40 undergraduate students (20 male and 20 female). Overall, the results showed that the four typographic factors had significant effect on readability. For male subject, Anova test result showed that there were interactions among contrast, screen rotation (landscape), font style, and font size. Further analysis with ANOM chart showed that while using black on white contrast and landscape screen, font at 8 sp delivered fastest response time, meanwhile using white on black and landscape screen, Roboto font at 6 sp delivered fastest response time. For female subject, Anova test result showed that there were interactions among contrast, screen rotation (portrait), font style, and font size. Further analysis with ANOM chart showed that while using black text on white background, font at 8 sp delivered fastest response time, meanwhile using white text on black background on portrait screen, Gothic Bold font at 6 sp delivered fastest response time.
