Isi artikelParsonian theory of the major functional dimensions of social processes-adaptive, goal-gratification, integrative, and pattern-maintenance-is adapted to the description of the process within the family of food purchasing, meal planning, and food consumption. Measures of the first three of these dimensions are developed and related to a classification of families by life cycle stage. Data were obtained from a sample of over 4,000 homemakers in seven southern states. The analysis supports the hypothesis that adaptive, integrative, and goal-gratification activity and functioning is associated with family life cycle stages, and the implications of the findings for the identification of the stage at which the food consumption process becomes a primary developmental role task for the homemaker are discussed.
