Isi artikelSeventy-three families of known heroin users on methadone maintenance programs were interviewed in New Orleans. All of the husbands were on a program, and twenty-two of the wives. Ninety per cent were born and reared in New Orleans and an additional five per cent came from contiguous states. There were no addicted wives whose husbands were not addicted. Indices such as work patterns, time spent with wife and children, sharing of household chores and disciplinary problems were examined from a "before" and "after" comparative view. On all the indices, activity after entering methadone maintenance programs reflected more nonnative patterns of behavior for the socioeconomic group to which the respondents belonged. One finding runs contrary to widely held beliefs about the effects of methadone in that a large majority of the wives reported increased sexual activity by their husbands after entering the programs. Wives perceived police as being less threatening, and did not exhibit marked bitterness toward drug laws. It would appear that, for married addicts, with families, and especially with children, methadone maintenance programs produce changes in behavior and benefits apart from any "cure" of the individual's addiction
